Due to rapidly changing buying behaviors, a renewed focus on in-store experiences, and a growing skills and resource gap, these retail store locations needed to evolve their traditional WLAN infrastructures. The breadth of the locations’ technologies and platforms had grown by 4x in the past few years, and current infrastructure could not scale.

The game changer

With the adoption of Juniper Mist solutions, retail stores turned their operations around with experience-first networking and predictable, reliable, measurable Wi-Fi. As a result, the IT team has unprecedented visibility into user experiences, and can consistently deliver on expected service levels.

WLAN was a must to leverage the scale and resiliency of the public cloud, and had to be based on modern engineering principles. Full access to rich APIs was needed to integrate the network into an in-house tool suite.

A university’s CIO needed to align IT initiatives with their campus mission and strategic plan—staying at the leading edge of technology. Wi-Fi experiences had to be prioritized; students demanded fast and reliable wireless service, but the network was being pushed to its capacity.

Over 25,000 connected devices and counting created a mediocre Wi-Fi experience, especially in historic buildings and large lecture halls. The ability to connect beyond the dorm was a necessity; students required access to the learning management system or classroom technologies from a variety of places on campus.

The best network

The university completely refreshed its network, from fiber to access points, with Juniper Mist solutions. Rollout started with smaller areas of the campus, with plans to adopt new networking solutions across 200 buildings.

The campus network leverages Ethernet VPN-Virtual Extensible LAN (EVPN-VXLAN) to deliver Layer 2/Layer 3 connectivity with greater scale and efficiency. This significantly increases security zones on campus. Additionally, Juniper’s solutions create a more reliable and automated networking experience.

The outcome

With the new 5 GHz Wi-Fi network, designed for high-density mobile environments, students can easily access learning management systems, collaborate on presentations and even run engineering simulations—no matter their location on campus. At the same time, professors can use connected devices as visual aids in class, and administrative staff always have the resources they need to complete their duties successfully.

Juniper Mist solutions give IT visibility into user experiences, and can establish, measure and enforce defined service levels. The team is notified of connectivity issues, and campus staff can even resolve more issues independently, without escalating to the IT team. In the end, the team experienced a 10x reduction in ticket escalations.
